Elevated Living, Designed for You

Miami Living (ML): Danushka, welcome! We’re so happy to have you with us. For those meeting you for the first time, can you share a little about your journey and what first sparked your passion for interior design and curating beautiful spaces?

Danushka: I studied interior design at the Art Institute of Miami, and I’ve always been drawn to home décor and beautifully curated spaces. About 15 years ago, I opened my first store in Haiti, which I still manage today from Miami, while continuing to travel and source pieces internationally. Before that, I worked with a design firm in Coral Gables and at a furniture store, and those experiences gave me the confidence to eventually build something of my own.

ML: Canush has been described as more than a store – it’s a design destination. How did your background as an interior designer shape the atmosphere and experience you wanted people to feel the moment they walk through the doors?

Danushka: My background in interior design played a big role in how I envisioned Canush. I wanted the space to feel inviting, elevated, and easy to experience, with a neutral palette that allows the products themselves to stand out. Thoughtful lighting, layout, and store flow are all important to me because they help create a showroom that feels inspiring and intentional the moment you walk in.

ML: Canush brings together a mix of international design influences, from handcrafted objects to books and decorative accents. What inspires the way you curate the collection each season?

Danushka: I’m constantly sourcing and staying up to date with what’s new from suppliers around the world. Travel and design fairs are a huge source of inspiration for me, and I always look for pieces that feel fresh, beautiful, and relevant to the way my customers live. Some items come together quickly, while others take more planning, but the goal is always to keep the collection feeling thoughtful and current.

ML: As an interior designer, what are a few small details people can add to their homes that instantly elevate a space?

Danushka: A few simple details can completely transform a space - books, pillows, and vases are some of my favorites. I always recommend starting with a neutral base and then updating and swapping accessories seasonally for a fresh feel. I also believe in choosing fewer, bigger pieces, like one beautiful statement vase, rather than filling a room with too much.

ML: Interior design has the power to influence how we feel in our homes. What do you hope customers discover about their own personal style or living spaces when they visit Canush?

Danushka: I hope customers leave feeling inspired to discover and define their own personal style. Everyone experiences the space differently, and that’s what makes it special. Canush is meant to spark ideas and help people see new possibilities for their homes in a way that feels personal and approachable.

ML: Beyond shopping, Canush has also become a space for creative workshops and community gatherings. Why was it important for you to create that kind of environment?

Danushka: It was important to me that Canush is more than just a store. I wanted to create a beautiful space where people could gather, connect and build a relationship with the brand in a more meaningful way. Those experiences help create lasting impressions and make people feel part of the Canush community.

ML: As a designer and founder, you’re constantly immersed in creativity. What inspires you right now – whether it’s travel, art, architecture, or everyday moments – and how does that influence what we see inside Canush?

Danushka: Travel is one of my biggest sources of inspiration, and I almost always bring back new ideas from the places I visit. For me, inspiration can come from anywhere - architecture, design, art, or even everyday moments - and all of that naturally influences what you see inside Canush.

ML: Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of Canush?

Danushka: What excites me most is continuing to build partnerships, grow relationships with new customers and designers, and keep expanding the Canush community. My vision is for Canush to become a go-to source for elevated home accessorizing, where curation, inspiration, and lifestyle naturally come together.
