Felekşan Onar, Fy-Shan Glass Studio
Felekşan Onar
Tell us about the origins of Fy-Shan Glass Studio?
Felekşan: Fy-Shan Glass Studio was born out of my passion for storytelling through glass—a material that has always fascinated me with its ability to transform light, texture, and emotion. I officially founded the studio in 2009 but my journey with glass began much earlier. Going to school in İzmir, Turkey, I was introduced to glass painting at high school and later in Istanbul, a city steeped in layers of history and artistry, I was inspired by the interplay of tradition and modernity. This influence naturally shaped my creative perspective. I wanted Fy-Shan Glass Studio to be a space where I could combine my love for fine craftsmanship and contemporary design to create pieces that spark curiosity and connection. Every project we undertake reflects a desire to push the boundaries of what glass can express—whether it’s a delicate sculpture, an architectural installation, or functional furniture. For me, glass is more than just a medium; it’s a way of narrating stories that resonate universally.
What does the name Fy-Shan symbolize?
Felekşan: The name "Fy-shan" is both personal and meaningful. It’s derived from my own name, Felekşan, which carries a deep connection to my Turkish heritage. Fyshan is my nickname and the hyphenated form, "Fy-shan," was chosen as a way to make the name more accessible and memorable internationally while still preserving its unique identity. The name encapsulates the essence of the studio—a blend of tradition and modernity, much like my work. It represents not just me as an artist but also the broader vision of creating timeless pieces that resonate across cultures, reflecting both individuality and universality.
How did the partnership with Haremlique come about?
Felekşan: The partnership with Haremlique Istanbul began back home when I collaborated with them to create an exclusive line inspired by their brand's refined aesthetic and shared appreciation for craftsmanship. That initial collaboration was such a rewarding experience, and it highlighted how beautifully our visions aligned. When I was planning for the Art Basel season in Miami, I realized that my latest collection, Island Living, with its vibrant, breezy elegance, would be a perfect fit for the city’s atmosphere. I approached Haremlique with the idea, and they were incredibly kind and enthusiastic about hosting me at their Bal Harbour pop-up. It’s been such a wonderful partnership that celebrates both creativity and collaboration.
What is the hardest part about blowing glass? What is your favorite part?
Felekşan: Blowing glass is both a physical and emotional journey, and its challenges are part of what makes it so rewarding. The hardest part is mastering the unpredictability of the material. Glass is incredibly temperamental—it demands your full attention, precision, and respect. The smallest change in temperature, timing, or pressure can completely alter the outcome. There’s no room for hesitation or second-guessing, and you have to be comfortable working on the edge of control and chaos. But that’s also what makes it magical. My favorite part of blowing glass is the moment when molten glass transforms into something tangible and beautiful. There’s an almost meditative quality to working with the material—it’s alive, glowing, and ever-changing. I also love the collaborative aspect of glassblowing. It’s a dance between the artist, the team, and the material, and when everything comes together, the results can be extraordinary. It’s this balance of challenge and reward that keeps me coming back to the craft every day.

What inspired the “Island Living” collection?
Felekşan: The Island Living collection is a celebration of summer’s carefree spirit—a story of dining on terraces overlooking vast oceans, wisteria swaying in gentle breezes, and moments of joy shared with loved ones. The collection was inspired by the essence of summer: long, leisurely days filled with games, laughter, and cocktails, all enhanced by exquisitely handcrafted glass pieces that spark delight. The collection captures the magic of summer sunsets with its mesmerizing shades of glass, offering a vibrant palette of colors for truly one-of-a-kind table settings. It features a range of mouth-blown, hot-formed, and hand-carved pieces, each designed to elevate moments of conviviality and togetherness. From timeless carafes and tulip tumblers to gemstone-colored vases engraved with ocean motifs, every piece adds a playful yet elegant touch to your table. Sculptural additions, like the striking coral leaf and urchin designs, further enhance themed settings. The barware line is another highlight of Island Living. It brings a sense of holiday fun to cocktail hour with frosty shot glasses, sculptural liquor decanters, and cocktail shakers, all in joyful summer tones like pink, lilac, and neon yellow. Whether it’s a refreshing drink served in a charming tumbler or flowers and candles adorning your summer table, this collection is designed to embody the soul of the season—conviviality, beauty, and delight.
Who or what inspires you?
Felekşan: Inspiration for me comes from many sources, but at the heart of it all is my connection to Istanbul—a city that is both a muse and a mirror of my creative process. Its layers of history, diverse cultures, and juxtaposition of the old and the new continually shape my perspective as an artist. I find beauty in contrasts, much like the interplay of fragility and strength in glass itself. Nature is another constant source of inspiration. The organic forms, fluidity, and resilience found in the natural world deeply influence my work. For instance, my recent Island Living collection draws from the vibrant energy and serenity of coastal landscapes. Beyond places and forms, I’m inspired by stories—those told through objects, architecture, and human connections. My aim is to craft pieces that not only reflect my inspirations but also invite others to find their own meanings within them.
What excites you most about Art Basel this year?
Felekşan: For me, the highlight of Art Basel has always been Design Miami. It’s such a dynamic platform that beautifully showcases the intersection of art, design, and craftsmanship. I’m particularly excited to visit the booth of Atelier Courbet, a gallery that represents me and champions exceptional artisanship. Their dedication to curating works that blend traditional techniques with contemporary innovation is truly inspiring, and it’s always a joy to see their latest collection and connect with their team. Art Basel and Design Miami are not just about the art on display—they’re also about the conversations, the creative energy, and the exchange of ideas that fuel inspiration for years to come.
Who are some of your favorite artists or designers and why?
Felekşan: I draw inspiration from a wide range of artists and designers, each for their unique approach and contribution to their craft. One of my favorites is Carlo Scarpa, whose mastery in combining architecture, glass, and design has always fascinated me. His ability to blend modernist sensibilities with traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques is incredibly inspiring. Another artist I deeply admire is Louise Bourgeois. Her work resonates with me because of its emotional depth and how she channels personal history into universal narratives. Her sculptures often explore themes of fragility and strength, which are qualities I also find in glass as a medium. In the realm of contemporary design, I am drawn to the work of Michael Anastassiades. His minimalist aesthetic and attention to detail are remarkable, and his ability to create timeless pieces with a quiet elegance speaks to my own design philosophy. These creatives inspire me not only for their artistry but also for their ability to push boundaries while remaining true to their vision. Each of them, in their own way, has influenced how I think about material, form, and storytelling through design.
What are some of your favorite places in Miami from a design perspective?
Felekşan: Miami is such a vibrant city, and I always look forward to exploring its rich mix of art, design, culture, and cuisine. The Design District is one of my favorite places—it's a hub of creativity where galleries, luxury boutiques, and public art come together. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA) is a must-visit for its thought-provoking exhibitions and stunning architecture. For a deeper dive into Miami’s cultural history, I love the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Its waterfront location and focus on contemporary art make it a truly inspiring space. Wynwood Walls is another favorite, especially for its dynamic street art and murals that give the neighborhood so much energy and character. When it comes to cuisine, I’m drawn to places that celebrate Miami’s multicultural heritage. Mandolin Aegean Bistro is a favorite for its fresh, Mediterranean flavors, while restaurants like COTE Miami offer a unique blend of elevated dining and immersive design. Miami is a city that pulses with creativity, and during Art Basel, it’s especially alive with inspiration at every turn.

What’s next for Fy-Shan Glass Studio?
Felekşan: Next for Fy-Shan Glass Studio is returning home to Istanbul to present my collection, “Touched.” This body of work delves into themes of connection, memory, and the physicality of craftsmanship, and I’m thrilled to showcase it in a city so deeply intertwined with my creative journey. The collection features three distinct forms, each available in several color combinations. Every piece is uniquely touched while still hot during the creation process, making no two exactly alike. This intentional gesture emphasizes the human connection and individuality inherent in each work.
Anything else we should know?
Felekşan: I am honored to be part of a show at the Harvard Art Museums. The Gardens installation at the Harvard Art Museums features seven delicate glass swallows from my Shattered series. Curated by Dr. Aysin Yoltar-Yildirim, the installation is located in the Art of Islamic Lands gallery, where my contemporary glass sculptures are thoughtfully paired with an 18th-century Persian carpet. This combination creates a compelling conversation between traditional craftsmanship and modern artistic expression. The swallows are deeply personal works, inspired by the 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria. Each piece is adorned with gold-filled cracks, a technique inspired by Japanese kintsugi, symbolizing resilience, transformation, and the beauty found in imperfection. The gold lines reflect the strength that emerges from healing and the fragility of life itself. Birds hold symbolic significance in Islamic art and literature, often associated with gardens and paradise. This installation reimagines that symbolism, with my multicolored swallows evoking the sensory beauty and serenity of gardens described in Islamic tradition. Surrounded by South Asian paintings and situated within the gallery’s rich historical context, the swallows encourage visitors to reflect on renewal, connection, and the enduring power of art. I am excited about the current installation and will be coming back to Boston for some talks and possibly workshops. The Gardens installation is another step in my journey to explore the boundaries of glass as a medium, bridging heritage and contemporary vision. I’m honored to see my work displayed in dialogue with such an extraordinary collection.

Tell us about the Haremlique origin story:
Caroline: Haremlique Istanbul was founded in 2007 with a vision to bring Turkey’s rich heritage into contemporary living spaces. The idea was born from a personal passion for reviving Anatolian craftsmanship and transforming it into elegant, modern designs for today’s homes. Textiles had always been a part of my family’s business, so creating a brand rooted in Turkey’s heritage and expertise in fine textiles felt like a natural extension of my own story. The name “Haremlique” reflects this inspiration, referencing the private quarters of Ottoman palaces, known as the harem, where artistry, culture, and tradition flourished. Haremlique specializes in premium home textiles, including bespoke bed linens, towels, and loungewear, crafted with the finest materials and meticulous attention to detail. The brand offers a unique lifestyle experience that resonates with discerning clients worldwide.

Who or what inspires you?
Caroline: Our primary inspiration comes from Turkey’s rich cultural heritage—whether it’s the intricate patterns of Iznik tiles, the architectural beauty of historical structures, or the breathtaking natural landscapes. At the same time, I draw inspiration from travel, art, and contemporary design. Each collection is a dialogue between tradition and modernity, blending cultural significance with simplicity and elegance. Although I’m not a designer by formal education, I’ve always had a passion for curating and bringing elements together to create cohesive collections. My inspiration is deeply rooted in Turkey’s history and the diverse cultures and empires that have shaped Anatolia over centuries. This rich tapestry of influences allows me and my team to craft collections that feel timeless yet relevant, always honoring the heritage of this unique region.
What is your connection to Miami?
Caroline: My husband and I spent a lot of time in Miami over the years and gradually really enjoyed with the city. Initially, it was our investment projects that brought us here more frequently, but as we spent more time, we grew to appreciate Miami’s unique energy and vibrant culture. I found it to be a place where diverse communities and an international audience come together, which aligned perfectly with our brand. The blend of cosmopolitan lifestyles and a deep appreciation for quality and design made Miami an ideal match for Haremlique.
Tell us about your Miami boutique locations in the Four Seasons Surf Club and Bal Harbour Shops:
Caroline: The Four Seasons Surf Club was the perfect choice for us to showcase our collections. Its iconic and inspiring setting perfectly aligns with our brand’s aesthetic and philosophy. We felt it was an ideal match—a beautiful, sophisticated space that resonates with the refined tastes of our clientele. We opened our Bal Harbour boutique in 2022 as a seamless next step after seeing the positive response to our Surf Club boutique. This decision allowed us to further showcase the breadth of our collection, particularly our home textiles, to a wider audience. Bal Harbour, as a global destination for art, design, and luxury living, felt like the perfect location to connect with a discerning clientele who value timeless craftsmanship and refined living. It was an opportunity to deepen our presence in Miami and continue introducing our brand to an international audience.
What are some of your favorite places to frequent in Miami?
Caroline: Miami offers a vibrant tapestry of experiences that I find endlessly inspiring. For art and design, the Miami Design District and the Pérez Art Museum Miami are must-visits—both are brimming with creativity, from contemporary art exhibitions to innovative architecture. For dining, I love the intimate charm of Casa Tua, a Mediterranean villa in South Beach, as well as The Lido Restaurant at the Four Seasons Surf Club, where the exceptional food is perfectly paired with stunning ocean views. I also enjoy the lively energy of Little Havana, especially strolling along Calle Ocho, where you can soak in the music, art, and authentic Cuban flavors that make Miami so culturally rich.
How did the Art Basel partnership with Feleksan Onar of Fy-Shan Glass Studio begin?
