Palazzo Ducale Venturi: A Restored 16th-Century Palace Offering One of Puglia's Most Luxurious Escapes

Staying in a beautifully restored historic residence is something few of us have experienced, myself included. That is precisely why anyone visiting Puglia should consider Palazzo Ducale Venturi, a meticulously restored 16th-century noble palace located in the heart of Salento.


Originally built around 1500 as Castello Nuovo, the property began as a settlement of the Knights Templar before evolving into an aristocratic residence.



From the outside, the palace immediately caught my attention with its imposing limestone façade, centuries-old stonework, monumental green wooden entrance door, and original stone machicolations once used to defend the palace against foreign attackers. It certainly sets the tone for what awaits inside.


Stepping through the entrance felt like traveling back in time. The property's heritage is evident in its ancient stone architecture, original Lecce stone star-vaulted ceilings, historic stone floors, preserved salt ovens, and 13th-century stone well. No wonder the restoration was completed under the supervision of Italy's Ministry of Cultural Heritage.


The hotel's living room serves as both the lobby and a gathering space for guests. It features vaulted white ceilings, original limestone floors, a monumental carved stone fireplace, antique paintings, period furnishings, and a black upright piano. Leather Chesterfield sofas provide comfortable seating, while the carefully preserved architectural details create an atmosphere of timeless elegance.



Location


Palazzo Ducale Venturi is located in Minervino di Lecce, a quiet village in central Salento. While many travelers head straight to popular destinations like Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli, or Santa Maria di Leuca, Minervino serves as a peaceful base for exploring southern Puglia.


Having a rental car made visiting the region's attractions easy. Salento's coastal towns, beaches, wineries, and historic villages are all within a comfortable driving distance, allowing you to explore at your own pace before returning to the tranquility of the palace each afternoon.


Rooms & Suites


The property offers 25 rooms and suites, including 11 accommodations in the recently renovated Armoury and Guesthouse. Each room preserves the palace's historic character while incorporating modern comforts and luxury amenities.



My suite was located in the separate Armoury building on the ground floor and featured a charming private garden overlooking the grand swimming pool. The interiors combined classic antiques with luxurious bedding, while the exceptionally spacious bathroom included double sinks, two showers, generous counter space, and premium bath amenities, creating a space that was both elegant and highly functional for couples.



If you choose one of the historic suites inside the main Palazzo, be sure to look up. The principal suite features an original vaulted ceiling fresco depicting the legend of Saint George, said to have been Duke Venturi's favorite.


Dining


Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily overlooking the outdoor swimming pool. The breakfast buffet includes homemade pastries, fresh breads, regional jams, seasonal fruit, local cheeses, made-to-order hot dishes, and freshly prepared juices.



The on-site Restaurant Duca Venturi operates under the direction of Chef Francesco Paladino. The menu focuses on authentic Salento flavors using fresh seafood and locally sourced agricultural products.



The property also preserves two ancient stone ovens that now serve as the centerpiece for hands-on cooking classes, where you can learn traditional bread making and Neapolitan-style pizza baking.


Amenities & Wellness


The wellness facilities strike a thoughtful balance between historic architecture and modern comfort. Beneath the palace, an ancient underground olive oil mill has been transformed into a heated indoor pool complete with a Jacuzzi, creating one of the property's most memorable spaces.


The Armoury also houses a serene spa offering tradition-inspired treatments, along with a well-equipped fitness center featuring modern equipment for full-body workouts.



Each morning before breakfast, I found myself taking a swim in the property's large outdoor pool. Surrounded by ancient stone walls, it is spacious enough for comfortable lap swimming, while the adjacent Pool Bar serves drinks, cocktails, and light local snacks throughout the day.


Don't miss the opportunity to stroll through the property's Secret Garden, a peaceful space filled with a lush variety of native plants, where the fragrant scent of the surrounding citrus grove completes the experience.


Experiences & Activities


Palazzo Ducale Venturi offers a variety of immersive experiences that showcase the traditions of Salento. Take part in hands-on pasta, bread, and pizza cooking classes led by local chefs, or visit a nearby masseria for cheesemaking demonstrations and the opportunity to feed newborn calves.


Wine enthusiasts can enjoy curated tastings featuring regional wineries, while whisky lovers can sample more than 40 labels from around the world.


For coastal excursions, the hotel offers exclusive access to partner beach clubs with private transfers and convenient room-charging privileges. Additional experiences include yoga sessions, horseback riding, ceramics workshops, guided food tours of Lecce, scenic drives in a vintage Fiat 500, boat excursions, and traditional Pizzica dance lessons.


History & Local Legends


Like many centuries-old Italian palaces, Palazzo Ducale Venturi has its own fascinating legend. According to local lore, Duke Venturi carried on a secret romance with the Abbess of a nearby convent and commissioned an underground tunnel linking the palace to the monastery, allowing the two to meet away from curious eyes. Whether fact or folklore, the story adds another layer of intrigue to this remarkable historic residence.
