Nicole Moyo Walkthrough & Opening Reception for “Love Letter to Ndebele Women”

Join the Miami Design District for an event that merges art with a powerful message of heritage and women's empowerment. The Opening Reception for Nicole Moyo's Love Letter to Ndebele Women will take place on Saturday, March 8, at Palm Court Plaza, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The event kicks off with a design commission walkthrough led by Nicole Moyo herself at 4 p.m., meeting at Palm Court. Then, from 6 to 8 p.m., attendees are invited to the opening reception for Love Letter to Ndebele Women at 70 NE 40th St.

This exhibition honors the collective of over 100 Ndebele women artisans who contributed their craftsmanship, cultural knowledge, and artistic heritage to Pearl Jam, Nicole Moyo's 2025 Design Commission. Through intricate beadwork, these artisans from the Ndebele tribe in southern Africa share stories of identity and belonging, preserving a legacy passed down through generations. The exhibit will be available for a limited time, running from Saturday, March 8 through Sunday, March 9, 2025.

The larger Pearl Jam installation, part of the Miami Design District’s Annual Design Commission in collaboration with the Design Miami Curatorial Lab, features jewelry-inspired sculptures such as oversized pearls, a deconstructable necklace, a sprawling bracelet, and radiant earrings—each influenced by the bold patterns and colors of Ndebele culture.

Nicole Moyo, born in Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa, and now based in Toronto, brings a rich cultural perspective to her work. For this commission, she collaborated with indigenous Ndebele women to craft over 1,000 earrings using locally sourced materials. These pieces not only serve as symbols of empowerment but also highlight the connections between diverse cultures.
