New World Symphony Announces Passing of Co-Founder Michael Tilson Thomas

The New World Symphony has announced the death of its Co-Founder and Artistic Director Laureate, Michael Tilson Thomas, who died at home on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, surrounded by family and friends.
The institution said its Fellows, alumni, Trustees and staff are mourning the loss of the conductor and composer, noting that he will be remembered for his intellect, imagination and collaborative spirit, which deeply shaped the New World Symphony community.
Tilson Thomas co-founded the New World Symphony with Ted and Lin Arison and helped establish what the organization describes as a global corps of artist leaders, whose work will continue to carry forward his influence on orchestral performance and music education.
