Music Drama Frost Symphony Orchestra

ree

A milestone for the Frost Centennial opens the program with the world premiere of Cosmic Hieroglyphs—Homage to Count Basie by Augusta Read Thomas, the final work in the anniversary commission series and a testament to the school’s forward-looking spirit.

Sergei Prokofiev’s stirring suite from the ballet Romeo and Juliet then pours Shakespeare’s tragedy into bold orchestral colors, from swaggering street fights to the lovers’ aching farewell.

The evening concludes with San Juan Hill by acclaimed trumpeter, composer and Frost faculty Etienne Charles. Commissioned by Lincoln Center and the New York Philharmonic for the reopening of David Geffen Hall, San Juan Hill  is a vivid musical and visual portrait inspired by the vibrant culture and history of a New York neighborhood that has long been a cornerstone of American jazz.
