Located in the village of Pianello del Lario on Lake Como, the Barca Lariana Museum (Museo Barca Lariana) occupies a restored 19th‑century silk mill and is one of Lombardy's leading examples of a museum that connects collections with the surrounding cultural landscape. The Barca Lariana Museum preserves one of Europe's most significant collections dedicated to inland navigation and Italian nautical history.
The museum spans approximately 2,500 square meters of exhibition and storage space, complemented by 2,000 square meters of lakeside parkland. Its collection includes more than 400 historic boats, ranging from rowing boats, gondolas, fishing vessels, and traditional Lake Como craft to steam launches, racing boats, sailboats, and working barges. The museum also houses more than 300 historic engines, thousands of artifacts related to boatbuilding and navigation, an extensive archive of photographs, recordings, technical documents, and a specialized library containing more than 2,500 books and industry publications.
Among its most important exhibits are the world's oldest preserved gondola with a traditional enclosed felze cabin; the Laura I° Abbate, the first boat to exceed 200 km/h, a three-point hydroplane masterpiece conceived by the visionary Guido Abbate; the Olympic sailing yacht Merope, sailed by Agostino Straulino to a gold medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics; the late‑19th‑century English Cisko‑Yu Thames A‑Rater; the Balilla, recognized as the first single‑propeller steam vessel; and the Freccia dei Gerani, the only surviving Rodrigues RHS70 hydrofoil.
Rather than focusing solely on boats, the museum presents nautical heritage as a lens through which to understand Italian history, illustrating how innovation, commerce, transportation, sport, and everyday life have evolved from Roman times to the present. Educational programs for schools include guided historical activities and hands‑on workshops that introduce younger generations to Italy's maritime traditions.
Recent investments have expanded the museum with new exhibition galleries, dedicated displays of Riva motorboats and Venetian gondolas, a lakeside bistro with panoramic terraces, and outdoor event spaces overlooking Lake Como. The museum is also digitizing its archives, allowing visitors and researchers to access technical records, historical photographs, and documentation while encouraging public contributions of photographs, documents, and personal testimonies.
“Le Barche Raccontano” (“The Boats Tell Stories”)
Le Barche Raccontano (“The Boats Tell Stories”), supported by the Cariplo Foundation (Fondazione Cariplo) through the Valore della Cultura 2025 program, is an ongoing project that explores the relationship between boating, Italian industry, innovation, and society through seven thematic sections. A narrative journey through the stories of visionary industrialists, athletes, and families who shaped the history of Italian sport and industry.
The project unfolds through new museum panels and multimedia installations, with completion scheduled for 2027.
The exhibition highlights influential families and figures whose impact extended beyond boating, including the Parodi family and their ventures such as Moto Guzzi and De Giorgi engines, FIAT’s early history through rare artifacts, explorer Guido Monzino’s boat collection, Luchino Visconti’s boat Anna, pioneers of marine engineering, innovators of Italian waterskiing, and Serafino and Carlo Riva, whose shipyard became a symbol of Italian yacht design.
Founded through collector GianAlberto Zanoletti’s lifelong work, the Museum preserves and shares Italy’s nautical heritage.
It is open seasonally, with opening days and hours varying throughout the year. Guided tours, educational programs, group visits, and private events are available by reservation.
