As the holiday season approaches, a time traditionally marked by giving, one Miami resident who has dedicated his life to giving back is now in need of help. Dustin Hurtt, a former lead instructor for web development at Ironhack, is currently battling aggressive cancer and is seeking support from the community during this challenging time.
Dustin has spent years teaching aspiring tech professionals, guiding them to successful careers in the software development industry. His teaching has had a profound impact on the lives of many students, several of whom have gone on to achieve notable success in their fields. However, after undergoing lung removal surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City earlier this year, Dustin’s battle with cancer has taken an unexpected turn. While the surgery initially seemed to remove all cancerous tissue, recent tests showed that some cancer remains, necessitating costly and experimental treatments.
One such treatment is a Phase I trial through the Jaime Leandro Foundation, which offers hope but is not covered by insurance. To help with the substantial financial burden, Dustin has launched a GoFundMe campaign, hoping the community will rally around him as he faces this life-or-death situation.
"I’ve had the privilege of helping people change their lives," Dustin said, reflecting on his years as an educator. "Now, as I fight for my life, I draw strength from the students I've mentored, and I hope that the lessons I imparted to them will help me now."
Dustin’s former students have been vocal about the impact he had on their lives and careers. Nikita Valovyy, a Miami-area graduate, described Dustin as more than just a teacher: “Dustin didn’t just teach me to code, he unlocked a career I once thought was out of reach. His belief in me was invaluable.”
Similarly, Juan Camilo Reyes praised Dustin’s influence: “He was not only an amazing mentor but also an incredible human being. His dedication to his students has left a lasting impact on our lives.”
Another former student, Alexander Torres Rivera, highlighted Dustin’s support during tough times. “Dustin’s patience and guidance were crucial in my success. He matched my effort with unwavering support, and that made all the difference.”
Despite the difficult prognosis, Dustin remains determined to continue his fight, both for his health and for the values he holds dear. “I’m afraid to die, but I want to continue making a positive impact on the world,” he said, emphasizing his desire to continue doing good for others.
As the holiday season of giving begins, Dustin is thankful for the outpouring of love and support he has received so far. “The contributions, whether financial or emotional, mean the world to me,” he said. "I am truly grateful for the community that has supported me throughout my career, and I hope they will continue to stand by me as I face this new challenge."
Stephanie Menjivar, a former colleague at Ironhack, expressed her support for Dustin during this difficult time. "Dustin’s work has touched so many lives, and now he needs the support of the same community he helped build. I encourage anyone who believes in the power of education and community to contribute to his campaign."
