As Earth Month arrives in April, travelers are increasingly seeking ways to explore more responsibly. Across Greater Miami and Miami Beach, hotels and restaurants are weaving sustainability into the guest experience. From beachfront resorts with Green Key certifications to restaurants championing hyper-local ingredients, these destinations show that environmentally conscious travel can be both thoughtful and luxurious.

Greater Miami and Miami Beach puts sustainability at the forefront of the visitor experience. Adjacent to Miami International Airport, the largest floating solar array in the southeastern U.S. greets travelers from above, while LEED-certified terminals equipped with $45 million in energy-efficient lighting and upgraded HVAC and water systems reduce the airport’s carbon footprint. At PortMiami, up to three cruise ships at a time can plug into shore power, cutting emissions by as much as 98% while docked

The commitment extends across the hospitality and culinary sectors, with more than 30 Florida Green Lodging-designated hotels and several LEED-certified properties implementing measures such as reclaimed building materials, motion-controlled lighting, water-efficient fixtures and the elimination of single-use plastics. Restaurants across the region embrace farm-to-table sourcing and zero-waste composting practices.

Outdoor experiences further connect visitors to conservation, from kayaking in Biscayne National Park and exploring the Everglades to snorkeling the ReefLine, a newly opened seven-mile underwater sculpture park designed to foster coral growth. Its inaugural installation, Leandro Erlich’s “Concrete Coral,” transforms submerged cars into a living reef, blending art, ecology and tourism.

Novotel Miami Brickell, which features 275 rooms and suites, a fitness center, a climate-controlled outdoor pool with skyline views, and more than 5,000 square feet of meeting space, operates as a single-use plastic-free property. It is one of just 70 hotels in Greater Miami recognized by Green Key for its commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club, Autograph Collection, Miami Beach’s first LEED-certified hotel, takes a triple-bottom-line approach to sustainability through Hersha Hotels & Resorts’ EarthView program. Recognized with Green Key certification and the Florida Green Lodging Program’s top “three palms” rating, the hotel supports initiatives such as Clean the World, property-wide recycling, turtle conservation, branded bicycles, recycled key cards, LED lighting, smart thermostats, EcoLab’s water- and energy-saving laundry program, and PATH water bottles in every room.

ECO-FRIENDLY HOTELS & RESORTS

Hotel Continental, a Tapestry Collection by Hilton property, participates in Clean the World’s Global Recycling Program, turning gently used soap and amenity bottles into new soap for vulnerable communities. Recycling bins throughout the property encourage guests to engage in responsible waste practices, making sustainability part of the stay.

This month at The Betsy, “The Betsy Orb”—the egg-shaped architectural bridge connecting the hotel’s two buildings—will illuminate with “Aesthetics of Decay,” a site-specific cinematic work by local transmedia artist dNASAb (pronounced diz-nee). The piece explores the evolving relationship between technology, ecology and South Florida’s threatened ecosystems using reclaimed marine debris reimagined into sculptural forms. Additional details and the viewing schedule can be viewed HERE.

Arlo Hotels recently announced a partnership with regenerative travel platform Kind Traveler, bringing its Every Stay Gives Back™ (ESGB) program to major cities across the country. Through the program, Arlo Wynwood donates $0.50 per night, per guest, from every stay to Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, a local nonprofit that rescues, rehabilitates and releases injured wildlife while advancing conservation education in South Florida.

The partnership ensures that every hotel stay creates a meaningful environmental impact without requiring any change in how guests book or travel. Guests can engage with the program through on-property QR codes linking to Kind Traveler’s Positive Impact Dashboard, which provides real-time transparency into how their stays support wildlife care and environmental stewardship efforts.

EARTH DAY EVENTS - APRIL 22

Arlo Wynwood invites guests to Art, Corals & Oceanography - An Earth Day Lecture Series, a dynamic evening at Higher Ground where art, science and community come together. Taking place on April 23 at 6 p.m., the event centers around the unveiling of two original works by Miami-based artist Gustavo Oviedo, known for drawing inspiration from the vibrant—and increasingly fragile—worlds beneath the ocean’s surface.

The evening unfolds through a series of talks that bring the ocean to life from multiple perspectives. Oviedo will share the story behind his work, followed by Devon Ledbetter of Rescue a Reef, who will spotlight how everyday people can play a role in coral conservation. Andrei Steyn of Students for Coral will bring a fresh, youth-driven voice to climate advocacy, and Dr. Lisa Beal, professor of Oceanography at the University of Miami, will connect it all through the lens of science and global impact. With time to explore the artwork, mingle and connect between talks, the experience is designed to spark curiosity, conversation and a deeper appreciation for the ocean and its future. RSVP for free on Eventbrite, as capacity is limited.
