Sunday at the Miami Open presented by Itaú saw a series of dramatic upsets across both the ATP and WTA tours. American Sebastian Korda stunned the top seed and World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, marking Korda’s first victory over a No. 1-ranked player. This opens up the men’s draw for fellow Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, who both secured straight-set wins.
The women’s side was equally unpredictable, with three seeded players falling in the third round. Hailey Baptiste defeated No. 9 Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-5, while Jaqueline Cristian overcame No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova in a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) battle. Qualifier Talia Gibson also claimed her biggest win yet, taking out No. 18 Iva Jovic 6-2, 6-2.
Looking Ahead: Round of 16 & Key Matches
Monday promises a full slate of women’s Round of 16 matches and the conclusion of the men’s third round. Nine of the Top 16 seeds have reached the WTA fourth round, including a Top 10 clash between 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva and 19-year-old Victoria Mboko. The teenagers, who teamed up for a doubles win Sunday, have each claimed a victory in their two previous meetings this season.
On the men’s side, defending champion Jakub Mensik will face Frances Tiafoe, while top seeds No. 2 Jannik Sinner and No. 3 Alexander Zverev will also be in action.
