Miami International Airport (MIA) is inviting artists from around the globe to submit qualifications for a transformative public art commission that will redefine the airport’s visual identity for decades to come. The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, through its Art in Public Places Program (APP) in partnership with the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD), has announced a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the design of landmark cladding-screening artworks across MIA’s Dolphin, Flamingo, and newly built Ibis Garages.
With a project budget of $5,750,000, the initiative seeks visionary visual artists—local, national, and international—capable of creating large-scale works that transform utilitarian structures into cultural landmarks. The commissioned design will not only serve as a striking architectural enhancement but will also engage MIA employees, travelers, and passers-by with unexpected and inspiring artistic experiences.
Shortlisted artists will receive stipends, plus travel allowances, to participate in an intensive concept development phase in collaboration with APP, MDAD, and the project’s architectural and engineering consultants. The final commissioned artist will be expected to work as part of the project team for a period of at least four years, ensuring the design’s seamless integration into the garage structures. Fabrication and installation will be handled by the selected general contractor.
The RFQ deadline is Monday, September 29, 2025, at 11:59 PM (ET). Interested artists are encouraged to carefully review the full project brief and submission requirements before applying.
This ambitious project underscores Miami’s commitment to integrating art into public spaces, creating iconic landmarks that reflect the city’s dynamic culture and global reach.
