Miami Artist DISEM Unveils "Who Authorized This?" Exhibition
Miami-based artist DISEM has announced his latest exhibition, Who Authorized This?, marking a new milestone after more than twenty-five years as a graffiti writer. The exhibition examines the underlying boundaries, traditions, social systems, and implicit assumptions that shape human perception and decision-making. Taking its title from a question repeatedly posed by observers while he painted walls throughout his career, the concept extends beyond the physical space of street art to question the origins of societal rules and why individuals accept them without critique.
Drawing from his personal background as a child immigrant to Miami and decades of working across the city's urban landscape, the body of work balances diverse artistic traditions without acting as a literal autobiography. The pieces merge contrasting visual formats, pairing graffiti techniques with classical realism, street culture with fine art, and permanent materials with temporary structures. This juxtaposition reflects the environmental and cultural complexities of Miami, where overlapping histories, identities, and traditions constantly influence one another.
Rather than establishing a singular perspective, Who Authorized This? is designed as an open dialogue that invites viewers to reflect on their own inherited beliefs and personal histories. The exhibition emphasizes awareness over authority, encouraging audiences to consider how external structures quietly inform their daily decisions. The artist envisions the work as an evolving conversation where meaning develops continuously through viewer interaction and personal reflection.
The exhibition was realized through an artist grant provided by Zig-Zag, awarded as part of the Museum of Graffiti's Miami Art Week programming hosted by Daymond John. DISEM secured the grant after presenting a live pitch to a panel of judges, winning both the grand prize and a promotional billboard provided by Outfront Media. As part of the opening event, the first 150 attendees will receive a complimentary Levi’s® Trucker Jacket featuring a custom hand-screenprinted design by the artist.
