Safe Travels

In order to enter the Bahamas, you will need to apply for a Bahamas Health Travel Visa. The steps below may appear complicated but I found them easy and hassle-free. After all, keeping you and others safe should be top priority. Follow these 5 steps and enjoy a smooth sailing entrance into Paradise Island.

  1. Obtain a COVID-19 RT PCR test five days prior to arrival.

  2. Visit www.travel.gov.bs and apply for a Bahamas Health Travel Visa. During the application process, you will be asked to upload your negative COVID-19 test result, flight details, including the duration and location of your stay. Once approved, you will be notified via email. At this stage, you’ll be required to purchase health insurance, which didn’t cost very much; I paid $40 for a 4-night stay.

  3. For the duration of your visit, you are required to complete a daily short online health questionnaire for symptom-monitoring purposes. This process only takes 2 minutes or less.

  4. Take a COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test on Day 5 of your stay (unless departing on day 5). Keep in mind that if you are returning to the U.S., you will be required to show proof of a negative PCR or Antigen test (aka rapid test). Your test can be done up to 3 days prior to your return; both COVID-19 test types are acceptable.

  5. As always, wear a mask and social distance.

When to Visit

Nassau’s peak season begins mid-December and goes until mid-April. The Caribbean hurricane season (from June to November) is considered low season due to unpredictable weather but still a desirable period to visit the island, especially for those looking for discounted rates.

History

Founded in 1670 by the British Empire, Nassau became a central location for “The Golden Age of Piracy,” which lasted for thirty years from 1690 to 1720. It also experienced a military assault by the Spanish in 1720. In 1973, The Bahamas became a free and sovereign country after 325 years of British rule. Today, it is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Today, Nassau relies heavily on tourism and has a strong offshore financial services and trade.

Currency

The Bahamian Dollar (BSD) is the equivalent of the U.S. dollar. To distinguish the currency from others, the symbol B$ is used. Businesses in Nassau, Bahamas accept either USD or BSD. If you are given BSD, it is advised to use it before departing from the island as it is not accepted elsewhere.

Key Attractions

Beyond more than 15 crystal-clear turquoise beaches, Nassau offers some notable attractions, including Graycliff’s Wine Cellar (the third-largest in the world), Andros Barrier Reef, excursions to nearby islands and secluded beaches, and ATV tours, including historical landmarks, such as Queen’s Staircase and Fort Charlotte.
