If you are planning a trip to the area and want to explore gambling games, it’s essential you learn more about gambling laws in Florida. Gambling is legal but limited. If you are focused on online gambling, it’s equally important to know more about your options. Review more details on gambling services below, including information on laws and regulations.

Florida Gambling Laws

Gambling and sports betting are legal in Florida based on specific laws. You can access casino gaming at tribal venues, state lottery games, pari-mutuel wagering on horses, poker card rooms, sports betting, and social gaming. The sweepstakes social gaming sites are the only way to explore online casinos in Florida. The state is also home to daily fantasy sports.

Age Limits for Gaming Include:

  • 21 and older for casino games.

  • Lottery, bingo, and pari-mutuel betting have an 18+ limit.

  • Social casino sweepstakes sites should also have an 18+ limit.

Miami's hot spots for physical gaming include Hialeah Park Racing, which offers thoroughbred and quarter-horse racing. Magic City Casino, located in downtown Miami, offers over 1,000 Las Vegas-style slot machines, poker tables, and seasonal Jai-Alai options.

You can also visit Calder Casino & Race Course, a more upscale gaming venue. Visitors to Calder can explore a huge 100,000-square-foot gaming floor with over 1,000 slot machines, video poker, and electronic table games.

Online Gambling Alternative

Regarding real money gambling, Florida does not allow players to access online casino games. You won’t find big names like BetMGM or Caesars offering real money iGaming services with slots and table games.

Instead, players can utilize a loophole in legislation allowing sweepstakes sites to provide services. Sweepstakes gaming laws allow iGaming via virtual currency like Gold and Sweeps Coins. Players in locations like Miami can create a new account with a sweepstakes provider and play similar slot and table games.

The reason sweepstakes sites differ from real money sites is the money element. Online casinos require players to deposit funds to play. Sweepstakes sites have a no-purchase necessary policy. You can join for free and use Gold and Sweeps Coins to play any game.

How Sweeps Sites Work

Once you join a sweepstakes online casino site, you must understand how the virtual currency works. Gold Coins are freeplay only and do not provide any prize from wins. Using the Sweeps Coins, you can redeem played SCs for prizes.

Sites can offer gift cards for SC redemption and real prizes via bank transfer. Each site is different, so reviewing the fine print and understanding its features is essential before creating a new player account.

Sweepstakes gaming is a legal gray area, and we may see action taken against such services in the future. However, players can now easily access online gaming sites and explore casino-like play at no cost.

Online Sports Betting

One exception to the iGaming legislation in Florida is sports betting. After several legal proceedings, online sports betting was allowed to launch services. The only operator currently is Hard Rock Bet, connected to the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

The main issues behind online gaming generally stem from tribal compacts in the state. The Seminole Tribe wants exclusive rights to gaming operations, while commercial operators also want in. So far, no common ground has been found to allow real-money iGaming from any entities except for Hard Rock Bet and its sports betting services.

Looking ahead, experts believe Florida will legalize casino apps in the future. How soon is anyone’s guess? Florida and the Seminole Tribe continue to work together and offer quality gaming options, so it’s only a matter of time before another expansion is made to the existing compact to feature additional options like online casino games.

Sports betting may also increase, with additional operators added in the future. However, this will also be contingent on the compact, so it may take some time before any other services are allowed.
