Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo will face runner-up Renegade again in Saturday’s $2 million Belmont Stakes (G1), highlighting a strong three-year-old field that includes several other Derby alumni.

Only a neck separated Golden Tempo and Renegade at the finish of the Kentucky Derby, and the pair will resume their rivalry over the Belmont distance of 1 1/4 miles. Renegade has been installed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the rematch, while Golden Tempo is listed at 9-2.

Golden Tempo stormed from last place to win the Derby and is considered well suited to the Belmont trip based on his stamina-oriented pedigree. The field’s depth is reinforced by other Kentucky Derby runners, including Chief Wallabee, who finished fourth, Commandment, who finished seventh, and Emerging Market, who finished tenth.

Renegade enters the Belmont as the morning-line favorite after capturing the Arkansas Derby (G1) two starts ago and finishing second in the Run for the Roses for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. He is expected to settle off the early pace before producing his usual late run under regular jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
