Flower Power: Parkland Nonprofit Transforms Floral Waste into Acts of Kindness

Parkland-based nonprofit Flower Power is reducing local floral waste by rescuing discarded flowers and repurposing them to bring joy to the community. In just over a year, the organization has rescued more than 5,000 bouquets to spread kindness to seniors, hospital patients, veterans, and individuals facing isolation or illness.
Founder Shayna Schon was inspired to start the organization after delivering flowers to sick friends and witnessing the emotional comfort the gesture provided. Drawing on her previous experience rescuing surplus food for nonprofits, Schon applied the same waste-reduction concept to the floral industry.
Partnering with local florists and businesses, Flower Power rescues dozens of bouquets each week. Volunteers refresh and rearrange the viable blooms before delivering them to senior living communities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and schools across North Broward and South Palm Beach counties.
Community Initiatives and Future Expansion
To support its ongoing mission, Flower Power offers paid, hands-on floral design workshops across South Florida. During these sessions, participants create two arrangements—one to take home and another to personally gift to someone in need of a kind gesture. The organization also recently launched a "Bloom Membership," a paid subscription where members receive a fresh bouquet every Friday, with proceeds directly funding the nonprofit's free deliveries.
Looking ahead, the founders envision expanding Flower Power into a full-time, statewide network across Florida. The ultimate goal is to mobilize hundreds of volunteers to assemble and deliver thousands of bouquets weekly.
"Every bouquet carries more than flowers—it carries hope, compassion, and the reminder that someone cares," Schon noted. "We believe kindness can bloom from something that was once considered waste."
