A new study reveals that Florida has the ninth-highest rate of motorcyclist fatalities during holiday travel periods in the United States.

The research by Florida-based personal injury lawyer Blakeley Law Firm analyzed the data for fatal and serious motorcycle crashes during major U.S. holidays from 2019 to 2023 using the NHTSA database. Average fatality rates per million residents were calculated to identify the states where motorcyclists are most at risk of experiencing deadly crashes during holiday weekends, including Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Florida ranks ninth with 1.96 motorcycle fatalities per million during holiday weekends, 33% above the national average of 1.47. It reports a striking 43.0 average holiday crashes, the highest crash count in the country. While the state attracts a large population of riders, especially during the holidays, the high crash volume highlights a critical public safety issue.

Looking at the study, a spokesperson at Blakeley Law Firm commented:

“The data shows that states like Florida face disproportionately high fatality rates for motorcyclists during holiday periods.

“These findings highlight the need for increased awareness, visibility measures, and enhanced traffic enforcement during holidays when traffic density and risk factors rise sharply.

“Riders should take every precaution during these times,  especially in states that consistently show high crash rates.”
