Florida Power and Light Shares Energy-Saving Tips for Cold Weather

As temperatures drop across the state, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is providing customers with strategies to manage energy consumption. Heating a home uses two to three times more energy than cooling, making preparation essential during cold snaps.

To manage costs, FPL recommends setting the thermostat to a comfortable level. Customers can save up to 5% on heating costs for every degree the thermostat is set below 68. The company advises against raising the thermostat by more than two degrees at a time. This prevents the system's auxiliary heating from activating, which can add up to $15 per day if used for over 12 hours.

For localized warmth, FPL suggests using space heaters in occupied rooms rather than heating the entire house. Space heaters should feature thermostats and timers for control and must be kept away from furniture and drapes. Users should turn off the heaters when leaving a room and keep children and pets at least three feet away. FPL also advises against using extension cords with these devices.

Other methods to stay warm include wearing layers and using electric blankets. Reversing the direction of a ceiling fan pushes warmer air down, though the fan should be turned off when the room is empty. Sealing doors and windows with weatherstripping or caulk keeps warm air inside. For homes with fireplaces, the damper should remain closed when not in use to prevent heat from escaping.

J.T. Young, FPL Vice President and General Manager, noted that planning ahead and making adjustments can help customers keep their bills low throughout the season.
