Fine & Rare Wine Sales Calendar July 2020:

  • 12 July: Hong Kong

  • 16-31 July: New York

  • 21 July: Geneva

  • 28 July: London

Live Auction: Hong Kong | Finest & Rarest Wines | 12 July 2020

Leading the Hong Kong sale on 12 July is an extensive range of Bordeaux First Growths and their equivalents on the right bank, and the most sought-after producers in Burgundy such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy and Domaine Armand Rousseau. An expanded offering of Scottish and Japanese single-malt whiskies from world-renowned distilleries will also be featured. In addition, this sale marks the inaugural offering of premium sake from the revered Juyondai. In total, the auction will present over 660 lots to wine connoisseurs around the world.

Live Auction: Geneva | Finest & Rarest Wines | 21 July 2020

Christie’s Geneva Finest & Rarest Wines live auction on 21 July has the pleasure to offer various private collections of mature Bordeaux and Burgundy from across Europe. Also, on offer is an exceptional private collection of rare 18th & 19th century Madeira, dating back to 1775 and 1789.

Faja Malvasia Madeira, 1 bottle, 1775: Faja is an incomparable vineyard, located at the foot of a cliff on Madeira island and legendary for its Malvasia vines. This exceptional bottle was discovered in an old family house only last year (estimate: CHF 5,000-7,000) and tasted by Edwin Voss in January 2020 (from a second similar bottle).

Tasting note: Intriguing intense rich nose of fudge, dried apricots and saffron spice, very gently singing from the glass. Subtle and multi-layered, each time you pick up your glass another palette of aromas presents itself. Great complexity and harmony. Unctuous first attack of taste, covering your palette with rich fruits, fresh shaved almonds and rhubarb aromas. The great acidity is nicely concentrated with a very good finish, showing a gentle touch of bitter. A complex wine of high quality. Fairly sweet and long cask aged. This is fantastic. The fine pretty grapefruit bitter is completing the phenomenal multidimensional aromas. A classic of the highest quality.

Another highlight of the auction is J.L. Chave Hermitage Cuvée Cathelin Vertical, 6 bottles, of 1990, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2009 (estimate: CHF45,000-65,000). It is extremely rare to find a complete vertical of all vintages released between 1990 and 2003 of this very rare Cuvée Cathelin, which was launched for the first time in 1990 at only 2,500 bottles. The labels have been designed by the French artist Bernard Cathelin (1919-2004), a friend of the Chave family. The family released only a very small number of bottles of this exceptional cuvee, when the quality of the wine was at its best and therewith it became a vinous legend and trophy to possess.
