Bugatti Redefines Roadster Aerodynamics with W16 Mistral
Bugatti has introduced the W16 Mistral, a roadster designed to travel at speeds exceeding 420 km/h while offering luxury and acoustic excellence. The car embodies Bugatti’s spirit of adventure and freedom, balancing high speed, performance, and aural pleasure.
The W16 Mistral’s development began with digital simulations, where engineers created innovative airflow designs. These designs were then tested and perfected in real-world conditions using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. The wind tunnel phase confirmed the aerodynamic body’s performance, achieving a balance of beauty, thermodynamics, and stability at high speeds.
Bugatti’s focus was on maintaining interior comfort and luxury at maximum speeds. The team successfully crafted an aerodynamic design that directs airflow away from occupants while ensuring the 16-cylinder powertrain operates efficiently. The roadster’s roof spoiler, positioned at the top of the windshield, channels airflow to maximize downforce and enhance aerodynamics.
The W16 Mistral’s interior can be transformed into a space of visceral emotion, matching the powertrain’s sound. Alternatively, it offers a serene environment with a high-tech sound system for a calming experience. The iconic Bugatti horseshoe grill has been redesigned to improve cooling, and the air scoops behind the occupants feed air directly to the engine’s turbochargers.
Intelligent air inlets on the side panels further maximize dynamic pressure levels, cooling the engine, gearbox, and rear axle. Hot air is funneled through ducts to the rear, enhancing downforce and stability. The unique X-tail light arrangement vents side oil coolers and manages the mid-temperature cooling circuit precisely.
Inspired by its heritage and technical expertise, Bugatti’s W16 Mistral is its most aerodynamic and emotional roadster to date.
