Bebel Gilberto, a Brazilian-American singer known for her contemporary interpretation of bossa nova, has made a lasting impact on global music. Combining traditional Brazilian rhythms with modern genres, she has carved out a unique artistic identity.

Her latest album, JOÃO, is a deeply personal tribute to her father, João Gilberto, the legendary creator of bossa nova. Through this project, she reimagines his classics with emotional depth and simplicity, celebrating his legacy while showcasing her own artistry.
In an exclusive interview, Bebel shares insights into how her work honors her family’s profound influence on Brazilian music while innovating within the genre. Her ability to blend tradition with modernity underscores the timeless appeal of bossa nova and highlights the power of personal expression in music.
ML: Can you share how your father’s legacy, as well as the contributions of your mother, Miúcha, and your uncle, Chico Buarque, have influenced the way you approach your music?
Music has always been a part of my life, growing up surrounded by musicians like my father and uncle. I began working with my mother on jingles and background vocals, and with my father and uncle, I gained valuable experience from a young age. Music truly resonates with me, and I have definitely been influenced by my father’s music, as well as my mother’s voice and my uncle’s inspiration. My knowledge of harmony and taste have developed through years of practice.
ML: Did you ever feel pressure to follow a particular path from your family, or did you always have the freedom to explore your own music?
Not at all.
ML: You beautifully blend traditional bossa nova with modern genres like electronic and jazz. How did this musical style come to be?
Since I moved to New York, I’ve been listening to more electronic music from artists like Everything But the Girl, Björk, and Lindsey. I also met Tate, who introduced me to a blend of tech and bossa nova. This inspired me to start finding my own style.
ML: What emotions surfaced for you during the creation of JOÃO, and in what ways did the album provide emotional healing or growth?
I have two projects to share with you. The first is my album, which was released during the pandemic. It was a difficult time for me as I was trying to take care of my father, who had always taken care of me. Many of the songs on the album reflect this experience.
The second project is João, which I worked on after my father passed away. It was a healing process for me, and I’m extremely happy with the results. I also had the opportunity to take his music around the world, playing in 22 countries. It was an unforgettable experience.
ML: What key themes did you aim to convey in JOÃO, and how did the production process differ from your previous albums?
I couldn’t not play some of the most famous songs such as desafinado and a valsa. For instance, “preciso perdoar“ was the song that I most loved doing. It definitely touched my heart and it also features a beautiful video.
It was a single of the album. And needed it to remain the only single we put out because it was so beautiful.
ML: Tell us about your experiences and time in Miami. Is there anything that particularly stands out worth sharing?
I love going to Miami. I always make sure that I come to see my friends at Faena and also my dear friend Amy Sacco.
I have great memories from Miami singing at Basil to electronic music in the early 2000.
ML: How does it feel to live in Brazil now after spending so many years in the United States?
It’s definitely a different life, but I keep going to New York and the rest of the world a lot, so that makes my life much more exciting and interesting! I would love to keep doing that because at the same time I have a very calm life in Brazil. Travel can be very tiring, so it’s a good balance and I don’t get to sider with winter.
ML: In your opinion, what is it about bossa nova that has such timeless appeal to a global audience?
You said the thing: it is because this is timeless and unique. It’s a type of music that can be played in any situation, and makes people feel lovely, sexy, and relaxed.
ML: Tell us about any upcoming musical or personal projects you’d like to share.
I’m excited to start working on my next project, which will be a completely different album. It will be more electronic with more compositions, and I’m feeling inspired to start it while I’m in Europe. Best.
ML: What might fans be surprised to learn about you?
That’s a secret, but who knows me knows me. Hah!

ML: Lastly, when you’re not on tour, what are some of your favorite ways to unwind and spend your time?
I’m so happy to be back in Brazil! It’s priceless to be surrounded by nature and quality time with friends and family. My days are filled with simple pleasures like long strolls on the beach, working out with a trainer, cooking, reading, watching movies, and eating at my favorite places. It’s a simple life, but it’s full of joy.
